Metasedimentary bifacial core from Queensland.  The core is heavily iron-stained, probably from resting in iron-rich sediments at or below the water table.

This core was made from a water-rolled cobble of metasedimentary stone.  Flakes were removed to both faces at one end of the cobble using a hard-hammer percussion technique.  An oxidised red iron deposit occur across both faces of the tool, including both the unmodified cortical surfaces and the flake scars.  The distribution and nature of the deposit suggests that is accumulated on the tool after it was discarded, rather than as a residue from use.  Iron-rich deposits like this sometimes occur on stones that are periodically saturated by ground water, often at or near the water table.  The context of the discovery of this tool is unknown.
