This large chert retouched flake from the New England Tablelands region of New South Wales.  The area is within the traditional country of the Jukumbal people.

This artefact is cared for on-country west of Inverell by the Jukumbal people.  The artefact was retrieved by Jukumbal representatives and loaned to Archaeology and Palaeoanthropology at the University of New England for 3D modelling, after which it was returned back to its location on-country.

This flake of high-quality chert was struck from a large cobble by hard-hammer percussion.  The dorsal surface is mostly covered by cortex, and the nature of the cortex suggests that the cobble was from a colluvial source.  The flake ended in a hinge termination.  Part of the distal end was flaked by striking blows onto the surface of the hinge, but the edges are mostly unmodified.  Two areas of possible use-wear microflaking and minor flaking are also present.  The blow that detached the flake initiated secondary cracks that exposed a nearly complete Hertzian cone.  The force of the blow also created well-developed eraillure scars on the ventral surface.
