This chert Pedernales point is from Texas. Pedernales points date to the Middle Archaic period, ca. 2500-3500 BP, and are considered the most common dart point type found in the state.
Pedernales points are stemmed with deeply indented bases. They were made by percussion flaking followed by non-invasive pressure flaking. The morphology of these points varies widely. The stem was often completed first, prior to final percussion and pressure flaking on the rest of the point. The artefact in this model has a prominent impact fracture at the tip, indicating that it functioned as a dart point.
